The Sheldon High School varsity boys’ soccer team has qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs for the first time since 2006.
Ironically, Sheldon’s first-round opponent this season is the same team – Davis - they faced three years ago. It’s also the same team that Franklin, the second seed from the Delta Valley Conference, would like to avoid.
Sheldon, which earned the second seed from the Delta River League, will travel to Davis in today’s opening round. Davis beat Sheldon 5-2 in the 2006 first round.
Franklin hosts Napa.
All first round games begin at 3 p.m.
Second round games will be played Tuesday, also at host sites, before the top half of the bracket will play semifinal games at Lincoln High School in Stockton and the bottom half will play at Folsom High School, both on Thursday.
The championship game is set for Saturday, Nov. 14, at Lincoln at 2 p.m.
The way the bracket is set up, the winner of Davis-Sheldon will face the Franklin-Napa winner, meaning a possible third meeting between Davis and Franklin.
Davis went 1-0-1 in two regular season meetings to clinch the Delta Valley Conference title. After a 1-1 tie at Davis, the winner of the second meeting automatically clinched the league title.
Davis won 4-0.
It could have been worse for Franklin. The loss could have dropped them to third in the DVC and a first-round game with nationally ranked Jesuit.
Instead, Franklin cemented the second seed and, thus, Valley clinched the final spot and a date with Jesuit.
The news also got better for Franklin.
By finishing second in league, they were placed in the top half of the bracket, with Jesuit on the bottom. While a second-round game with either Davis or Sheldon is an unsettling proposition, it also should be the lone real threat of advancing to the section championship.
Davis has not lost since Oct. 2, a 5-1 rout by Jesuit. Since, Davis went 9-0-1 in the DVC and scored four or more goals in five of its last seven games.
Franklin enters the playoffs at 21-1-4 overall and 7-1-2 in league. The first and only loss came at home to Davis in the final week.
Otherwise, Franklin started the season with a 24-game unbeaten streak.
Sheldon, which lost to Davis 5-0 and Franklin 3-2 earlier this season, has lost three of its last four games, although two of those were against Jesuit. Prior to that, Sheldon had a seven-game unbeaten streak.
Qualifying for the section playoffs seemed farfetched for Sheldon in the first month. Off to a 2-5 start, they regrouped in mid-September starting with a 5-1 road win at Elk Grove and then losing just once more over the next four weeks.
Valley qualified after concluding the regular season with consecutive wins over Laguna Creek (4-1) and Elk Grove (1-0).
