A second grade teacher at Elk Grove’s Stone Lake Elementary School was chosen as a Sacramento County Teacher of the Year 2010 on Sept. 2.

JoEllen Shanks earned the recognition at an awards ceremony hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education.

The county’s other teacher of the year is Deb House, a sixth grade teacher at the San Juan Unified School District.

Shanks and House are now nominees for the California Teacher of the Year competition.

Last May, Shanks was honored as the Teacher of the Year in the Elk Grove Unified School District.

“I believe that all students can learn as long as their teacher has high expectations and has a very caring attitude toward them and makes them feel safe,” she told the Citizen during a May interview.

Shanks has worked for Elk Grove Unified for the past 13 years. She taught second and third grades at Foulks Ranch Elementary School before coming to Stone Lake.

She also coached her fellow teachers and assisted in an after-school mentor program.

Along with her County Teacher of the Year recognition, Shanks was awarded the Elinor L. Hickey Award of Merit from the Sacramento County education board along with a trophy from the Sacramento Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry.
