Candidates running for the Elk Grove City Council and the Elk Grove Unified School District will speak to the public at an Oct. 9 election forum.

The Elk Grove Citizen and the League of Women Voters are co-hosting the event at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center in central Elk Grove on Thursday night, Oct. 9.

The Citizen invited the candidates to introduce themselves to the attendees and to state their positions on various issues affecting the community.

There are nine candidates running for three open seats on the Elk Grove City Council during this year’s election. All nine candidates have confirmed their attendance at the event.

For District 1, which covers most of the Laguna area, La Wanna Montgomery is challenging incumbent Jim Cooper.

In District 5, which covers Old Town and most of central Elk Grove, challengers Katherine Maestas, Robert Felts and KT Tran are running against incumbent Sophia Scherman.

And for District 3, which is centered on north Elk Grove, Steve Detrick and Greg Higley are running against incumbent Michael Leary.

For the Elk Grove Unified School District election, all of the incumbents are running unopposed except for William Lugg who is being challenged by Todd Danler. They are candidates based in the district’s Area 1, which is in the south Sacramento area.

The next election forum being hosted by the Citizen and the League of Women Voters will be held the following Thursday night on Oct. 16.

The candidates for the Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD) and the Florin Resource Conservation District (FRCD) will be speaking at the Oct. 16 forum.

Seven candidates are running for three seats on the CSD board, which governs the fire services for Elk Grove and Galt as well as parks and recreation services for Elk Grove.

As for the FRCD board, which governs water services for the Elk Grove area that lies east of Highway 99, there are five candidates running for two seats.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. and the Trigg center is located at 9510 Elk Grove Florin Road near Elk Grove Boulevard. Candidates and attendees will be seated in the school board room.
