With the bailiff from Judge Judy working as the emcee for the 2008 Teen Idol Competition, lots of laughs and excitement were felt at the show at Sheldon High School on April 25.

This is the Elk Grove Teen Center’s third Teen Idol Competition.

Four judges rated the performers and decided who would advance forward to the Teen Idol Finals on May 3 at Franklin High School at 7 p.m.

The judges are Joe Farris, Bret Hodge, Erika Attwater and Sean Burke, all locals in the Elk Grove community.

“I think this year we have a lot of potential and talent,” Attwater, who is a singer, said.

Petri Byrd, the emcee and also a board member at the Teen Center, kept the show moving with jokes as he introduced each performance.

Three bands were set to perform, but only two showed up. “The Solicitors” and “Pick Your Battles” both performed and moved forward to the finals. The band “A Fight For Valor” were no-shows to the show, so they will not be in the finals.

There were also three dance groups, a dancer Antonio Porter and the group “Deadly Alliance,” which includes dancers Johnny Mayz, Dareon Young and Isaac Sanders, made it through to the finals.

The dance group “Exclusive,” which included teens Shelby Irey and Tinesha Parker, was disqualified for adding additional dancers to their performance without authorization.

Fourteen teens sang to fight for the three vocalists spots in the competition’s finals.

The teens who sang were Bryonte Floid, Ashley Olson, Krizzia Manlangit, Joshua Vansteyn, Holly Vansteyn, Eliot Dancy, Roman, Tayler Miles, Angelo Castillo, Leslie Bernabe, Camryn Howard, Diana Campos and Nicole Norem.

Joshua Vansteyn, last year’s second place winner, did not advance to the finals this year where he sang and played the guitar.

Two performers sang with guitarists. Camryn Howard sang with Jon Perpetua “JP” on the guitar. The two performed a mix of “Suga Suga” by Baby Bash and “U Remind Me” by Usher. Although the two had a great performance they did not move forward.

Also singing with a guitarist was Nicole Norem who performed with Sergio Garcia. The pair did not advance either.

The singers who advanced forward were Tayler Miles, Leslie Bernabe and Diana Campos.

Miles, the last to perform before the intermission, sang “I’m With You” By Avril Lavigne.

Bernabe belted out “(You Make Me Feel) A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin.

Campos sang “Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood. All three teens hit all the notes, even the high ones, in their performances.

Also standing out was Angelo Castillo. He was a one-man band who played the harmonica, guitar and tambourine. Even though his performance was unique, he did not move forward.

Next up, the seven performers will be competing in the Teen Idol Finals.

The finals will be on Saturday, May 3 at the Franklin High School Multi-Purpose Room at 7 p.m. Admission is $7.
